What was your first job?
My first “real” job was at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in the continuing medical education department. Around this time, the first web browser was being introduced (Mosaic – later Netscape), and the birth of a new age of training began. As the youngest person on staff, everybody assumed that I must know this new “web technology.” It was a great opportunity to dive into distance education, and it gave me my first insight into the power of eLearning.
What industries would you say you know well?
I have supported the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in different capacities for over 10 years. In that time, I’ve come to both learn and appreciate the complexities of managing the safest air travel system in the world. Given my tenure at the FAA, I’ve experienced everything from a flight simulator, the FAA Command Center, a Tower, an En Route Center, to the Academy where controllers and technicians are trained.
Three things that many people don’t know about me
- When I was 19, I was certified as an Emergency Medical Technician and rode with a paramedic unit one summer
- One of my summer jobs in college was working as a phlebotomist (back in the day when you watched somebody stick people for 30 minutes, then off you went to visit patients).
- I have an avid fear of clowns and giant sunflowers – no idea why.
What is your work style?
I am a Type A, OCD freak! My clients love it (my wife hates it). I will actually get itchy if I see somebody’s Outlook has more than one unopened email. I’m highly organized, proactive, and obsessed with time management. However, I’m sensitive to others and I have an acute sense of situational awareness. I am actually happiest when I’m highly stressed, juggling multiple project and deadlines, and making the impossible possible.
